Hugo (Albert Emil Hermann) Dingler was born on 7 July 1881 in Munich. He studied mathematics and physics, for instance under Felix Klein, at the Universities of Erlangen, Munich and Göttingen. In 1906, he earned his doctorate from the University of Munich, followed by a habilitation (post-doctoral qualification) in 1921. From 1920 to 1932 he was a professor (a.o. Prof.) at the University of Munich. Two years into his tenure as professor at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, which he was appointed to in 1932, he was forced to resign. Following his dismissal, he worked as a contract lecturer at the University of Munich. He died in Munich on 29 June 1954.
Dingler's philosophical work is dedicated to establishing a methodological foundation for the exact sciences. He is considered to be one of the intellectual fathers of the Erlangen or methodical school of constructivism.
