Bruno de Finetti was born in Innsbruck on 13 June 1906. He studied applied mathematics in Milan and graduated in 1927 with an award-winning thesis. He received his venia legendi, i.e. his authorisation to teach, in 1930. For non-academic reasons, he was not appointed to a chair at the University of Trieste until 1950. In 1954, he transitioned to the University of Rome, where he stayed until his retirement in 1976. He died in Rome on 20 July 1985. De Finetti made important contributions to probability theory. Outside of Italy, he only became known after he received an invitation in 1951 and 1957 from Leonard Jimmie Sage, a renowned American statistician, to spend time at the University of Chicago
The collection is comprised of de Finetti’s student notebooks, papers and lecture manuscripts, newspaper clippings, private and official correspondence as well as documents on his scientific work and applied research. The majority of these documents is written in Italian.
