Finding OER

OER platforms for material research

OERinfo's OER Directories and Services website provides a good overview of platforms where you can find OER materials for your own training and further use. One recommendation on our part is the ZOERR (Central OER Repository of the Universities BaWü) and the Zenodo platform.

Other OER platforms

  • OERSI
The Open Educational Resources Search Index OERSI is a search engine that indexes various OER sources. When searching for OER, this can be a central starting point.
  • With the OERhörnchen educational material search you can find specific teaching/learning materials from selected educational projects, which are legally usable and changeable by a free license.
  • OpenLearnWare TU Darmstadt)
Lecture recordings from many departments can be accessed or linked here.
  • MITOPENCOURSEWARE  (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
MIT has been publishing free educational materials since 2002, mainly lecture notes, but also texts or entire courses with materials, activities and e-assessments
  • Hamburg Open Online University
Here you will find a collection of courses and learning materials that you may use (link) in your courses.
  • TIB AV-Portal
"The TIB AV-Portal offers access to quality-tested scientific films from the fields of technology as well as architecture, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics". (self description of the portal)
  • MOOIN - oncampus
Online university of applied sciences with a wide range of free and fee-based courses. Due to the Corona crisis one decided to offer many of the further training courses free of charge. The materials used in the courses are partly under free license and can also be used in your courses. Or you can refer to complete courses, which you then discuss further with the students in your teaching.
  • ORCA.nrw (Open Resources Campus NRW) is the collective OER portal of the universities in North-Rhine-Westphalia.
  • twillo is the central OER portal of the universities in Lower Saxony.

Search engines

Search engines and other platforms (e.g. Google, YouTube or Soundcloud) can often be set via filters so that only materials with a CC license are displayed as search results. A good guide for this can be found in the video from the online courseonline course by Dr. Sandra Schön (Salzburg Research) and PD Dr. Martin Ebner (TU Graz).

Images

Especially for freely usable images, such as photos or graphics, there are a large number of platforms that include open CC licenses. Especially Pixabay and Flickr are recommended. On Wikipedia, a webpage with links to corresponding platforms has also been compiled. Images and graphics under free licenses are also searchable via CC-Search, for example.

Music

There are also platforms for freely usable music, such as the FMA, which offer tracks with open CC licenses for download. Further platforms can be found on the Creative Commons website.

Videos

For videos, most platforms are still chargeable and the range of open CC licenses is not very large. One possibility is to search for videos on YouTube using the filter setting "Creative Commons". If you use good and free video platforms yourself, we would be happy to hear your tips!
